For whom the bell tolls
The Bell Tower, Home of the Swan Bells located at Elizabeth Quay in the heart of Perth won Gold in the category of ‘Tourist Attractions’ and Silver in the category of ‘Cultural Tourism’ at the 2017 Western Australian Tourism Awards.
On receiving the awards Manager Gerry Lyng said, “We are thrilled and honoured to receive this award on behalf of the Swan Bells Foundation, our Patrons and Ambassadors, all of whom play a vital role in its ongoing cultural significance”.
This is the third Gold Award the Bell Tower has received and in total, they have received 16 Western Australian Tourism Awards. This doesn’t stop them from looking for ways to improve their performance and the visitor experience having engaged Terrific Trading’s services for staff development in 2016 and again in 2017.
Gerry Lyng was kind enough to say, “Thanks for the great training sessions. We all get so much out of them. They are a great twice yearly tune up for our excellent team.”
Outback Elite Tours is a small tour operator based in Alice Springs that runs charters for maximum 10 passengers around Central Australia. As depicted in their company name they want their clients to feel elite. And who better than Italian gourmet, tour guide and Operations Manager, Filippo Gelada to ensure that clients are treated to a special experience.
Outback Elite Tours won the top award for ‘Tour and Transport Operators’ at the 2017 Brolga Northern Territory Tourism Awards.
Filippo says, “The Brolga recognises not only our love for this amazing region we live in, our passion for our job and culture, but also tourism business excellence in every area of our operation and we are so very proud to have one of our own!”
Filippo participated in the 2017 Terrific Tourism Business Improvement Program presented by Jan and Jurek in Alice Springs.
Curtin Springs – A Big Winner
Curtin Springs was the big winner at the 2017 Northern Territory Tourism Awards, taking out Best Tourist Attraction, Hosted Accommodation and the Chairman’s Choice for Outstanding Tourism Excellence. Peter Severin was also awarded the Tourism Minister’s Perpetual Trophy.
Curtin Springs has also won the 2016 Tourist attraction Brolga, the 2016 NT Natural Resource Management award, the 2016 AHA Awards of Excellence at Northern Territory and national level for tourist attraction and was runner up in the 2016 Wearable Arts Awards (Alice Springs).
Located just 100km east of Uluru, Curtin Springs offers a perfect base from which to visit Uluru and the Kings Canyon area. Curtin Springs provides a diverse jigsaw of experiences, offering visitors an appreciation of the deeply layered mosaic of landscape, culture, production and environmental features of Central Australia. Curtin Springs has become a true destination in its own right.
Lyndee Severin attended the 10 month Terrific Tourism Business Improvement Program in 2017, a real commitment with 4 workshops in Alice Springs. Lyndee said, “The structured approach to multiple sessions over the year was extremely important – as it kept us coming back to the processes regularly and creating the enforcement of the processes and skillset. We are using a range of the approaches regularly now with staff, for example every staff meeting has a session of ‘looking through the visitors eyes’ – looking at a different aspect of that first contact with visitors.”
Lyndee also arranged for Jan Collins to come out and conduct training for her staff on-site at Curtin Springs.

And as Gold Winners of the national tourism awards for Australia’s top visitor centre in 2015 and 2016 and Silver award winners in 2017, why wouldn’t you?
Run by Tourism Central Australia (TCA), the Alice Springs Visitor Information Centre’s primary focus is providing information and promoting this vast region. Research consistently shows that even in this internet era, when people contact a visitor centre they tend to stay longer, enjoy more experiences and spend more money in the region.
Terrific Trading’s Jan Collins provided training and merchandising assistance for the Alice Springs Visitor Information Centre in 2014. Interestingly, they had her back in June 2017 to provide further assistance. Why? Because CEO Stephen Schwer said that they won by implementing Jan’s report and recommendations.
Isn’t it interesting how the best don’t rest on their laurels? They continue to seek advice and feedback from others, are willing to implement ideas and continually strive to improve the customer experience.

Award Winning Focus
Mandurah Cruises and Gift Shop are situated an hour south of Perth, Western Australia, in the city of Mandurah where their cruises are Mandurah’s number one tourist attraction.
Whenever Jan or I present workshops in and around Mandurah, Rod and Cheryl Bishop and their team are in attendance. They continually invest in their people and processes and engage in additional coaching and consultancy from ourselves and other top training professionals.
It was wonderful to see the Small Business Minister announce them as Western Australian Regional Small Business Award winners for 2014.
The Minister said the business was a worthy winner, having grown from just one boat to a multi-faceted operation that relocated to bigger premises and increased its fleet to five boats. They have established a range of different activities, including lunch cruises, private parties, crabbing tours and even floating wakes – where families can scatter the ashes of their water-devoted loved ones while celebrating their lives. In Mandurah there’s a tradition of people who live along the local canals going ‘all out’ with their Christmas lights. Rod and Cheryl capitalise on this by running cruises during December to view the lights. These cruises are regularly booked to capacity.
“As a small, family business it is a great example of sound financial management and sensible business growth,” the Small Business Minister said.
Can Do Country Values
Gen Whisson, Senior Project Officer at the Shire of Kulin in Western Australia’s Wheatbelt is a wonderful example of the ‘can do’ attitude that energises and inspires others and helps achieve amazing things in rural communities.
As winner of the Sir David Brand 2013 Young Achiever Award and a key member of the Shire of Kulin 2014 Heritage Tourism Award winning team and finalists in the 2014 Local Government Award for Tourism she is a proud ambassador for her rural community. By the way, if anything could put a smile on a traveller’s face it’s the amazing art, ingenuity and humour on show along the Tin Horse Highway.
Country people often wear many hats – full time jobs, volunteer roles and additional business initiatives. Since winning her personal award Gen has taken on an additional role transforming her former home into Villa Kulin, fully self-contained accommodation for visitors to the town.
She opened in June 2014 and has been flat out ever since. She wrote to Jurek saying, “As a hospitality novice I want to thank you for all your advice which you gave to us in Kulin.
“One thing which has always stuck in my mind from the workshop was your Rose Coloured glasses analogy. This has stayed at the forefront of our business. Recently I had a couple stay who were travelling from New Zealand and left a note saying ‘The Villa is one of the best places we have ever stayed in. This is because we can tell the owner really cares about the guests comfort and experience’. I was so thrilled to get this on our feedback form. And I really want to thank you for offering your simple yet invaluable tips which really do work.”
They also launched a bike hire operation at Uluru (Ayers Rock) in October 2013 which has proved particularly popular with families and children. It runs from February through to November and won the 2014 Brolga Award for best new tourism development.
Former Tourism Manager, Dale McIver says, “We're big believers that one of the best ways to see Central Australia is by bicycle; we strive to offer cycling products that allow people to experience the nature and raw beauty of this spectacular and remote part of Australia.”
Dale completed the 2014 Alice Springs Business Improvement Program conducted by Jurek and Jan from Terrific Trading. Jennifer Rajher is a participant in the 2018 program.
Swan Valley Visitor Centre
The Swan Valley region hosts more than 2 million visitors a year and is a major contributor to tourism in Western Australia. The Swan Valley Visitor Centre offers state of the art services for this iconic food and wine destination on Perth’s doorstep. Through customer service excellence the Centre is a welcoming shop front for the entire Swan Valley region.
Operating with the equivalent of three full time employees and 25 exceptional volunteers, each dedicates their time and expertise to service visitors to the region.
Terrific Trading has worked directly with the Visitor Centre over recent years to provide specialised training in areas such as customer service, effective communication and relationships and phone essentials. We also deliver customer service training to all departments within the City of Swan.
The Visitor Centre has been honoured with the industry’s most prestigious award with its induction into the Western Australian Tourism Awards Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame Medal is only awarded to an entrant who receives a gold medal in the same category for three consecutive years.
In 2017 Swan Valley Visitor Centre were Gold Winners of the national tourism awards for Australia’s top visitor centre (out of 600+).
